Black Pearls Vol.6 “Get Your Enjoys!” (Koko Mojo) Expanding its collection of blues and rhythm and blues songs is album number six in the compelling series Black Pearls. Issued via Koko Mojo, the person responsible for the Black Pearls album series is Ronni Boysen, a multi-award winning blues guitarist from Denmark and, for those in the know, the founding member of The Kokomo Kings (See Rhythm Bomb Records for the band’s albums because they are worth checking out!), in addition to performing with Mud Morganfield Band (son of Muddy Waters) for the past thirteen years. With such talent and knowledge given the accompanying information regarding Ronni Boysen’s record buying habits and therefore ever-expanding collection, the giveaway are the many delightful records found in this album series so far. Volume Six, “Get Your Enjoys!”, features another twenty-eight tracks for your listening and/or dancing pleasures, and mixes some well-known artists with a considerable amount of lesserknown names as well. Such combinations often make for an interesting listen, and it’s safe to say that Black Pearls “Get Your Enjoys!” continues the winning combination. Evidence for such a statement can be heard through artists and tracks including Sugar Boy Williams’ ‘Little Girl’, Billy Guy (‘As Quiet As It’s Kept’), The Lamplighters doo-wop inspired ‘Hug A Little’, Little Buck (‘So Fine, So Sweet’), and Young Jessie with ‘Do You Love Me’. What is noticeable with this particular collection is the more measured pace of the songs, and this adds variation to the album series from what’s been issued to date. With female artists also represented here, with excellent performances from Varetta Dillard with ‘That’s Why I Cry’, Big Maybelle and ‘Goin’ Home Baby’, to Annie Laurie (‘Nobody’s Gonna Hurt You’), there is even more balance and variation, leaving only but high praise indeed for Black Pearls Vol.6 “Get Your Enjoys!”. There’s doo-wop track ‘Rumblin’ Tumblin’ Baby’ presented by Emeralds, to popcorn-rhythm and blues number ‘Listen Baby’ with a commanding performance by Angel Face With The Swing Masters. Ending Volume 7, “Oh! What A Wonderful Time” with two belters; the first from Big Sam & The House Wreckers’ with ‘At The Party’, and then following this with the instrumental ‘The Swinging Thing’ by Jimmy McCracklin, will leave the listener craving more but, rest assured, any such desires will soon be satisfied once the next instalment of this album series is released. Blink Before Christmas - A Koko-Mojo Christmas celebration

Doo-wop is not just for Christmas. A genre often associated with the festive period at the tail end of every year, and synonymous with a picture book setting of Christmas given the radiating warmth of harmonious vocals encased in gold, and emanating from the voices of a truly gifted combo. A false representation however, because doo-wop is music fit for any occasion. Much more than the imaginative associations of a Christmas backdrop that, granted, doo-wop possesses the power to conjure such picturesque imagery, but on an entirely different trajectory doo-wop also has the ability to portray emotions where melancholy is present whether due to economic hardships or universal theme of relationship woes. It’s in these moments where we all feel something, and there is no genre better equipped with the right utensils (i.e. Vocals) to convey such emotions, in addition to providing solace from difficulties that life has a tendency to produce. Different in comparison with the wild shenanigans of rock ‘n’ roll, and different given the approach of this latest compilation series from the good folks at Koko Mojo, the genre of doo-wop makes numerous connections with the genre of blues during Blues Meets Doo Wop Volume 1.
